Grand Canyon Caverns
HIKING into the canyon is one thing but exploring the vast networks of mining tunnels and caverns is something quite unique. I was fortunate enough to hook up with a group of geologists on my solo into the canyon. Their guidance and knowledge in leading into the underworld inspired the use of these elements in the novel 'HAVASUPAI', I hope everyone enjoys.
These were not the caverns I enter but offer a sampling of what I encountered. The areas I entered were self guided, off the beaten path.

Chester, a truly brave knight and inspiration.
He was there, every Wednesday and Saturday morning during the
fall. He arrived at 6:30 a.m. and stayed until all of the goods were sold, or
until market ended at 12 noon. He dispensed smiles and jokes, enquiring after
the welfare of everyone. The customers may have been distracted, or arguing, or
simply self-centered. But most responded, and they were the fortunate ones.
They saw that his smile extended into his bright blue eyes. They returned
weekly, after they discovered that his cider was delicious. He had a secret
recipe, and the fruit that went into his cider was always clean. Why did he
always choose to be such a positive force in his little sphere of influence? He
knew that whether he chose to be positive or negative, he was going to be in
constant pain, and have constant impediments in every aspect of his life. Being
negative could not change the fact that he was paralyzed, a paraplegic. Being
positive maintained the fact that he made a difference in his world. He was a
brave knight as he faced his opponent- the struggle of daily life.

We suffer the consequence of choices made in our youth, many times we are not even aware that our current situation is the result of an earlier misstep. It takes an ah-ha moment that most fail to find. Like the song says "in the desert you can remember your name......."

Do not dwell in the past, live in the moment.

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” -Buddha
It is easy to get lost in our thoughts. When we are doing mundane tasks, driving in our cars, sitting in meetings, or suffering through a boring lecture, it is very easy to think about the past or imagine future scenarios. Unfortunately, mental wanderings happen at the expense of the moment. Once we start down that path, we begin to miss the life that is happening around us. We have conversations with people and don’t remember anything that was said. We miss our children growing up because we spend too much time in our own heads. Staying present and focused can help alleviate a great deal of the stress. Being “in the moment” can help because:

Loss teaches value more than gain,
but no one wants to know your pain,
you hold it in with words refrain,
and then alone you break from strain,
you stumble across an empty plain
while people judge you with distain,
for they never knew you or your pain.
